The "view from the tap" is a regular message from Chris, the Landlord, about events past and future.
July 10, 2010
At long last we have some decent weather - it's been 3 summers since we had a good one. George has decided it is sufficiently dry to do "rolling in the dust", something he adores but has rarely been able to do. Once thoroughly dusted, he has been perfecting his "Lion on the Savannah" pose under the willow tree. Also, last week marked an important moment in George's occupation of the Pub Cat position; he went a whole week without hissing at, hitting or biting a single customer; perhaps the old boy is losing his touch. On the other hand, he may have realised the dangers involved - the previous week he tried to play "Bite the Jack Russell" and had to be rescued.
If you were wondering what's going on as you pass the pub at lunchtimes, we have a had quite a few "Essex Highlands" tour buses through the Dial in recent weeks and it looks as if they will be a regular feature here for the foreseeable future. These days are great fun and, with the help of our regulars, often turn into a bit of a party.
We recently had the midsummer event in the churchyard and I am glad to report that the barrel was emptied again this year, although hot cocoa felt more appropriate when we started. Thanks to everyone who supported the "Help for Heroes" book stall (and, especially, to Bob and Malcolm who ran it) - if you missed it, you'll have another opportunity at the main Fete in September. So far, the books have raised £142 for this excellent cause and I would like to double that before we finally dispose of the remaining volumes. Some of you will be interested to know that we have some free tickets for the Adnams Hospitality Marquee (including course admission) at the Newmarket race meeting 30 Sep-2 Oct. Several couples have already got theirs; perhaps if there is enough interest, some communal transport could be arranged.
Darren our Chef is producing some good special offers right now that include a pint or glass of wine in the price and we have revamped all of our menus; we shall also be serving extra salads in the summer weather.
Until September,
Chris and George (the cat)
